An idyllic path leads from the village through the forest to Maran, captivating visitors along the way. Squirrels and birds are tame and will even eat right out of your hand. On the approximately 2 km trail through the woods, you can observe, study, and, of course, photograph these charming creatures.
(Birds: Eurasian Jay, Nutcracker, Nuthatch, Crested Tit, Great Tit, Alpine Tit, Coal Tit, …)
On this popular themed trail, the squirrels come very close when they are being fed (they might even climb up your leg!), so you don’t necessarily need a very long telephoto lens. Walkers often take photos with their mobile phones. Those who want to photograph the animals in their natural habitat can also place nuts on tree stumps and wait for someone to retrieve them. Ideal conditions for practicing wildlife photography, even for beginners. If you also want to photograph small birds, bring the longest focal length you have.
Near the end of the trail is the restaurant “Isblaatere” / Hof Maran, where you can warm up, relax, and perhaps even sunbathe after you’ve had your fill of photography. From there you can hike back to the Obersee or take the bus. The Obersee itself is also a subject for photographs.
What to bring?
- Your favourite camera with normal and telephoto lenses (and perhaps a monopod)
- Suitable clothes for standing around in the winter wood, warm solid shoes, gloves
- (Arosa is located in the mountains at almost 1800 meters above sea level.)
- Picnic on the go for you
- Food for the animals such as walnuts, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds or birdseed (to keep the animal models patient)
Getting there
- By car: Drive to Parkplatz Obersee, Oberseepromenade, 7050 Arosa
- By train: From Zürich HB, take the IC3 at 06:38 to Chur, arriving at 07:52. In Chur change to the R16 to Arosa which leaves at 08:08, arriving at 09:09.
Cost
There is a participation fee of CHF20, which goes towards covering incidental costs incurred by the organiser and any remainder to supporting the club.
