We are very pleased to announce that the winning picture of our Q2/2016 competition on “Painted with Light” is the photo by Lisa Bond.

5 photos submitted capturing the essence of the competition theme. Some of the pictures that were presented by our contestants were taken during the light painting workshop organized by PICZ in early June.

Not very often we have such a head-to-head race in our competition. Even though the jury felt that the subject was taken a bit too literally, each of the members selected their top photographs evaluating the composition, creativity, technical quality and the content. In both stages of the voting, two pictures were having identical number of points as a sum of all the votes. In such situations, according to our rules, the winner is the one who submitted first. As much as we feel sorry for Maija who did not manage this time (but please don’t give up!), we would like to congratulate to Lisa for winning this race! The jury liked the overall composition and the nice contrast between the two different horizontal textures.

So, congratulations to Lisa who will receive a Velbon UP-400 monopod.

“When I took this photo I wasn’t initially thinking about the Painting with Light contest. My husband and I were going to just try taking some night star photos, something that I’ve never really tried before. I was on the patio before him and naturally became impatient waiting for him to get all of his gear, including our only tripod. So I thought I’d just see what happened.

I pointed the camera across the lake and pushed the button. The first photo I took was just blurry but you could easilly tell it was houses and the lake. (ISO 6400, f/5.6, .4s) So I messed with my settings to experiment as I’m not really good yet at knowing automatically what to do to fix something. My next photo was basically black with some white dots.  Horrible (ISO 6400, 5.6, 1/60s).  The shot you see here was my 3rd attempt.  I set my Canon EOS 7D Mark 11 to ISO 160, f/5.6 and 15s.  All of you experienced people probably can guess what happened. I started to take the photo and my hand moved and I knew the shot was gone so I decided to just move my camera around, a bit to be artistic and a bit out of frustration, until the 15 seconds was up.

When I looked at the result, I thought to myself, I just did a photo painted with light!  So I took several more (about 30 to be exact), now doing it on purpose.  Playing with times, movement, trains coming and going by, etc. When I looked at the photos later I loved this one and immediately thought I would title it, The Gold Coast, as that is what the other side of the lake is called and this photo definitely looked golden. So it was mostly an accident but of all the shots I took that night it is still my favorite. I like that it won because it shows that sometimes our mistakes in life, if we look at them in a different way, can be beautiful”
