We are very pleased to announce that the winning picture of our Q1/2016 competition on “Creative Blur” is “Slow Motion Panning” by Hinnerk Weiler.

9 photos submitted capturing the essence of the competition theme. Each of the members of the jury selected top photographs evaluating the composition, creativity, technical quality and the content.

As a result the Slow Motion Panning with its unusual ‘slow motion’ approach, contrary to most of the photos submitted, and beautiful painting colors grasped the jury’s attention.

Congratulations to Hinnerk who will receive Hama Optic HTMC Dust Ex Photo Cleaning Kit.

Duck on a Lake

“Thinking about the topic it was only natural to me that I would work with kind of a panning shoot. I love the way panning has an abstract capability to dissolve the environment without just turning it into an undefined blur. While that technique is mostly used to lay emphasis on the speed of really fast objects I try often to use it on slower things. This particular shot took me in the end three or four walks the lake to finally get a duck passing at constant but still fast enough speed to get the effect. (Someone feeding birds a few meters further turns out to be a great duck accelerator…)

Another challenge was to only pan left to right at low speed. A tripod with good video head would have been perfect for that but I had to shoot freehand. However the image stabilizer in my Canon 18-135 3.5-5.6 came in quite handy to compensate the up and down shaking. I started to turn about a second before I released the shutter to give the camera some time to adjust to the intended motion. Some post processing also applied using Photoshop: Enhancing the colors towards a bluish tone and adding bit of additional blur to the clouds to further remove contrasts”.
