According to Wikipedia: a multiple exposure is the superimposition of two or more exposures to create a single image, and double exposure has a corresponding meaning in respect of two images. The exposure values may or may not be identical to each other. Long-exposure, time-exposure, or slow-shutter photography involves using a long-duration shutter speed to sharply capture the stationary elements of images while blurring, smearing, or obscuring the moving elements.
This is all about the definition. Now let’s think about the practical aspect. In the pre-digital days, shooting multiple exposures was an advance technique. To obtain the correct exposure for the composite photographers had to adjust the exposure of individual frames and hope that their sums will work out right. Long exposure was of course much easier than that as it just involves slower shutter/longer time.
In today’s digital world, with top-notch cameras and Photoshop, these things are much simpler but still challenging if you want to be creative and get it right!
All DSLRs allow you to shoot the long exposure pictures and quite a number of cameras are capable of building the double or multiple-exposure!
Someone may ask, “Is Photoshopping allowed”? In the case of multiple exposure absolutely yes!
Spend some time mastering your camera, working with Photoshop, using your creativity to get an interesting result that you would like to share with others.
Just to let you know, one of the topics for this year’s Photo Laundry, which will be held on 9th of June (www.photolaundry.ch), is Multiple/Long Exposure, so give yourself a chance to practice in preparation for the exhibition!
The jury will evaluate your creativity, technical quality and uniqueness of the content.
